GCAP specializes in climate adaptation solutions. We are driven by solutions for clients, offering bespoke services and products for long-term support for transformational change. We have a unique approach; we are not a short-term consultancy firm, but start with gaining a deep understanding of our clients’ original business strategies in order to develop sustainable and best-value solutions to their unique climate change challenges. We see adaptation as a process, and offer solutions that will grow with time for future capacity within your organization. Our consulting and knowledge management services support managers holding nearly $10 billion in funds.

We offer services in the following areas:

Climate Risk Management for Financial Institutions

We develop tailored climate risk management systems to allow clients to identify, manage, and report on their climate risks. Our flagship Climate Safeguards System (CSS) ensures that all African Development Bank projects undergo a due diligence process to identify and manage climate risks prior to approval, ensuring that investments in the order of $5bn/year are resilient to climate change. We are currently developing, alongside our partners Atkins, a system to manage climate risks and track climate finance for the European Investment Bank, and we have recently consulted on procedures to manage climate risks and identify investment opportunities for the Inter-American Development Bank and the International Finance Corporation.

Our team blends world-leading technical knowledge on climate change with decades of business experience and systems development. We work closely with our clients to assess which approach is most appropriate, and choose from among our catalogue of tools for identifying and managing the climate risk to investments. Each client has a unique set of requirements, which is why each package of solutions is tailored to individual needs.

Does it consider the region’s geographical diversity and the different responses? Who is most vulnerable?

What current policies and programmes will be influential in planning your national adaptation strategy? What level is taking action?

We work with stakeholders across a range of policy areas to develop robust, flexible national adaptation strategies and build institutional capacity that are aligned with the unique context of the implementing country.

Our experts work in both the disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation communities performing and managing research, building capacity through conducting training programmes and developing effective solutions.

Baseline Social and Environmental Vulnerability Assessment

What is the region´s vulnerability to climate change from an environmental perspective?

What groups of society are more vulnerable to climate change?

What consequences of climate change will increase communities’ vulnerability to extreme events?

What ecosystems services are vulnerable to climate change?

In order to achieve successful adaptation strategies it is crucial to have a proper understanding of drivers of social and environmental vulnerability.  Our approaches consider the regional physical, social, environmental, economic and policy vulnerability and the constraints related with the urgency of solutions and shortage of sound information. We are experts in the standard approaches and techniques that are used in social and environmental assessments: we are currently developing innovative tools to offer our clients.

MicroAdaptation and Investment Risk

Are governments aware of the impacts of climate change on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)? How can SMEs be incorporated in the climate change adaptation agenda?

How does climate change affect the supply chain?

Are trade associations geared up for action? Could the final consumer be included in adaptation strategies?

The world is changing in the way we communicate, access to information, transferring money, and will continue to do so as people become increasingly mobile. Mobile technology has allowed the world’s poorest individuals and families to better connect with the rest of the world and consequently, has opened a new market that was previously inaccessible. Building on the growth of mobile technology, we are designing services to directly target companies and individuals on a mass scale. Business solutions for SMEs require a sound understanding of their constraints: our experts help them grow in a sustainable way.

Ecosystem Based Adaptation

How can the natural environment provide adaptation services?

What will be the impacts of climate change on the provision of ecosystem services?

Which ecosystem services could be compromised by climate change?

Which ecosystem services will allow a more efficient adaptation?

We understand the need for ecosystem-based approaches and the importance of assuring the provision of ecosystem services in the region.  We are aware of the benefits and limitations of EBAs and are working towards increasing awareness and importance at the local, regional and global level, our multidisciplinary team and understanding of the regional settings and realities makes our approach innovative and unique.
